Milestones in the Extirpation of San Lorenzo River Coho Salmon

coho young of the year

...A small documentary - originally prepared for Cabrillo College History 25 Spring/Fall 2008 - about the historical events leading up to the extirpation of San Lorenzo River coho salmon.

This is not an unusual tale...but one that has been repeated again and again for hundreds of years from Europe to New England...and here on the west coast of North America. The characters and details are different here, but the story is a very familiar one.

Nor is this an exhaustive exploration of this subject - but an overview of the primary factors leading to the decline of the San Lorenzo population of coho and an even briefer exploration of what the future may hold for them. More importantly, perhaps this will serve as an opportunity for informed, thoughtful debate about the factors leading to their decline, and what lessons we might take from that as we focus on their recovery.
